Message from Ovid J.L. Tzeng, Minister without Porfolio
Because of a deep cultural bias against commercial activities, Taiwan’s educational policy has always avoided talking about the personal value system concerning money; its curriculum rarely touches upon the topic of teaching financial management to school children; and, most parents regard the money matters as the older people’s business. Therefore, in Taiwan, except for the implanted concept of “saving is a virtue,” children have little chance of learning the right concepts of financial management. Living in a prosperous society in which multiple values and pluralistic life styles are operated within a knowledge-based economy system, one cannot be qualified to be a modern citizen without a proper understanding of various financial practices and an ability of appropriate financial management. It is, therefore, timely important to promote courses of financial management at every level of our educational system.
